Tui Snider’s handy little guide gives just enough information to make readers want to grab a camera and hit the roads of North Texas. I began reading it on a Friday, and by Saturday afternoon I had already visited four of the places she writes about along the historic Granbury square.While I didn’t have any ghostly encounters on my first trip—it was a sunny spring morning, after all—none of the destinations were a disappointment. Each had an interesting history and an employee or two willing to talk about their ghosts. And each was a place I could easily imagine being haunted.The author has a separate chapter for each destination, making the book easy to navigate, and she gives addresses and directions, making the spots easy to find.Her writing style is direct and clean. Not only did I enjoy reading the book, but my nine-year-old son read several of the stories to himself; enough of the book to cause me to have to sleep in the same room with him that night.I also appreciate the author’s telling readers which places are not worth a visit—Old Foamy in Cleburne, Texas for instance—so they won’t go on a “wild ghost chase,†as she puts it. I grew up near Cleburne and made a midnight visit to Old Foamy as a young teenager. Though it was a little creepy, it wasn’t much more than a low water crossing. Luckily the Goat Man didn’t make an appearance while I was there. All that to say, I agree with the author’s advice.I’m currently re-reading several of Snider’s chapters, and I’m looking forward to my next North Texas ghost hunting trip. Even if you don’t like ghosts, this little book will give you all kinds of ideas for day trips around the Fort Worth area.
I loved this book! Even though I don't live in Texas, I found it fascinating reading about the paranormal and haunted places there. Tui has organized this book extremely well. As with her previously published book, Unexpected Texas, I like that each chapter, each different location has the same topics covered, so you know exactly where to go to find specifics. Her writing style has an easy pace about it, and she is witty and funny and informative. This is a fun, easy read for anyone who enjoys a little spookiness, and a great source for anyone searching for information about the paranormal and haunted places in Texas.
I found the location information to be quite helpful to plan a visit to the sites described in the book. The organization of the sites by local area is also a great tool to help in planning a trip to these locales. The web links provided for each destination were mixed in their usefulness though. I would have preferred to see photos selected by the author included to help define each location from her point of view. I really appreciated the inclusion of back story details that were included for some entries. I hope to see many of the briefer entries expanded upon in future updates to this book. On the whole, the book is a mixed reading experience, but works exceptionally well as a planning guide to the many locations cited. I look forward to learning more from Tui Snider's future endeavors.
This will be handy on our next trip to Texas. It was a fun read even if I will never venture to the places mentioned.
Once again Tui Snider leads us down a path of intriguing and bizarre travel adventures with her new book "Paranormal Texas". It is chock full of little known venues as well as some very well known places. What is especially helpful in this book is the detailed background that includes what to do but also what NOT to do when you visit some of these sites. The etiquette of paranormal visitations were very enlightening as was the glossary of terms for those not familiar with paranormal phenomena. Add this one to your gift list for any Texan friends, those travelling to Texas or anyone interested in the paranormal.
This book was very informative about Haunted Sites in the DFW area, I would love to have this author do another book including haunted place in the whole state. I definitely plan on checking out some of the sites mentioned!
Great writing style and informative. Anyone looking for some places to do paranormal research in the D/FW area will love it as I did! Can't wait to read her other books.
Scary! Scary! Scary! I had to "take breaks " from reading it because I was too scared to continue!
