This is a very well-sourced book that is interesting, educational, and entertaining. Historical perspective sets up the discussion and then exposes politicians' attempts to pacify (without actually fixing problems) those who want common-sense reforms. The authors also propose actual solutions to the problems they outline in the book. As also the grandchild of four immigrants, I especially loved the open letter to the authors' immigrant grandparents. This is definitely a politically incorrect book; however, it is fact-based. Hopefully it will bring forth some intellectually honest debate for a change.
Full disclosure: My brother is one of the bold authors who thoughtfully dissemble the complex issues of illegal immigration and provide sane, teachable arguments for promoting the legitimate self-interest of our nation’s citizens.“Immigration-An America First Manifesto†challenges the premise that we should accept terror attacks on our soil as a part of our life, and it’s the price we have to pay for diversity.Emphasizing safety first, Chapter 6: Mission America, has the 15-step plan to strengthen and secure our nation.Use Chapter 7, “How to Sell Reality to People Allergic to Facts,†as a primer for explaining to an open-borders advocate why illegal immigration has become a crisis in need of wise policy decisions. This book is for those of us who prefer to “take careful thought for the future (at the risk of being vilified in the present), rather than letting our descendants fend for themselves.â€
This book should be required reading in all high schools across the country. It is an eye-opening account of the history of immigration and when and where it all began to go wrong. Now that I am finished reading it, I am making my children read it.The letter to the authors’ grandparents was hella sweet too.
Finally some common sense about immigration. An old Border Patrolman used to write a monthly column for a magazine I subscribed to about his adventures along the Rio Grande. As a matter of fact, I believe the title of his column was Tales of the Rio Grande."In any event, he started his column one month with, "Back in the early 60s when the Bracero Program was in full swing and illegal border crossing had dwindled to a bare trickle, my partner and I . . ." and he went on to describe another adventure he had in the early days of law enforcement when things were a little looser.I don't agree with the author that there are mobs of U.S. citizens waiting to do stoop labor picking strawberries in the hot Santa Maria sun or picking dates in August in Coachella, I do think we can have a controlled labor crossing without disrupting the rest of the U.S. labor market. When the farm worker could go back and forth across the border easily, come up for the growing season and go home for the holidays, Christmas, birthdays, Easter, quincineras and other important family holidays there was no need to bring the family to El Norte. They could remain in Mexico and enjoy a higher standard of living than if they snuck across the border to live in the U.S., but when the Bracero Program was eliminated thanks to Caesar Chavez, it became more difficult to cross the border. With the chance of getting caught or having to pay coyotes, the imperative to bring the family to El Norte became more of a better solution and then came the flood. When there was no penalty for illegally crossing the flood became a raging, uncontrolled torrent flooding the country with folks who had no intention of becoming part of the American scene.Rather than just sitting at his keyboard kvetching, the author actually offers some sensible solutions of our ever-increasing illegal border crosser problem.
This was a really good book that is certainly not politically correct. The one area I was sure would be covered was how Eisenhower handled illegal immigration. I'm not allowed by the censors to mention the name of the program even though it is enshrined in our history. But the opposite terminology would be Operation Dry Front. This was our nation's most successful program for dealing with the immigration problem and yet there isn't a single reference to it in this book.
Immigration has been in the news with the issues of DACA, suspension of immigration from certain countries, and the separation of children from parents who claimed asylum and refugee status. Other books on this issue abound, but this is a perspective that says we have a protestant Christian culture to uphold, and current immigration practices (lack of enforcement of existing laws, especially) threatens this. I think the authors could have gone into why we don't necessarily need more people in our country and the toll it takes on the environment to support this many people, but that wasn't their main concern with immigration. Now, if they would tackle the issue of the rising cost of healthcare and economics of that industry, that would be a real eye opener, too!
Fundamentally this book clarifies why a Nation needs immigrants and a process for that Nation to Assimilate THOSE IMMIGRANTS INTO PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS that support the Nations Laws. The concept of drawing immigrants here and keeping them with a overwhelming out of control welfare system that encourages the immigrant to stay regardless of them having a job, being productive to the society, and becoming an American that acknowledges the absolute authority of the U.S. Constitution as the law of the land and NOT subject to Judicial re-interpretation is foundational to our existence as a country. Many areas need to be put in order that are addressed, a clear issue is the relocation to America of refugees, by International Law the FIRST safe place bordering a country that refugees are fleeing from is where they should be moved to, NOT thousands of miles away so as to influence the host Nations demography for political advantage. Pick it up and be objective as you read, very good lesson plan for America going forward.
