The book is well written and clearly communicates the author’s complex metaphysical view of the essence of life, “God,†and overall reality. His views track largely, but not entirely, with Eastern religious thought. He rejects the fundamentalist and orthodox Christian belief (which I hold) about Jesus Christ, the resurrection, sin, and salvation. He accepts input from sources that have been rejected by the church to include the Gnostic gospels as well as input from extra-Biblical spiritual beings who he states “give service to the human population†a population in an “eternal prison of abject ignorance, fooled by the forms we have created with our minds.†One such spiritual entity identified as the Jane Roberts Seth entity, states that we create our own reality according to our beliefs. One of the author’s beliefs is that we, like God, are formless and "our five physical senses materialize as energy in a complexity of combined qualities." As I said, his metaphysical beliefs are complex, but, at least in my view, they are clearly communicated. Although I reject his beliefs, I recommend the book for anyone interested in getting a sense of what some are believing these days.
The Verbal Truth of Christianity was an interesting read. At times, I found myself thinking of The Philosophical Scientists by David Foster, of I and Thou, by Martin Buber, and of various books on lost civilizations. While there are many elements I would take issue with and disagree with, this short read raises some interesting questions regarding theology in general. For example, what textual sources should be included as authoritative or canonical, what is the focus of faith, and who is it that determines what is orthodox and what is heterodox.
I purchased this book as have been looking at nontraditional information concerning Jesus, religion, and spiritual matters. Most of the information posited here is interesting and enjoyable. The big take away for me is -- heaven is already here. It's a state of mind. Well that's what I got anyway. Maybe you hear what you want to hear? I most enjoyed the brevity of this book.
An enlightening, inspirational, intellectual analysis of God the Creator, that even an 'a-llectal' like myself can comprehend. This author is definitely tuned in to the stream of consciousness of a higher power and he has extensive knowledge of the scriptures. He is a genuine truth seeker and according to (John 18-37) the last words Jesus said to Pilate were, "I was born into this world to bare witness to the truth, anyone on the side of truth listens to me". I applaud the author's courage in writing this book -- it brings new meaning to the words in the "Our Father" (Lord's Prayer). Readers will finally realize that Christianity is not a religion -- it's a Tao and no religion owns it. A MUST READ -- Eamon McGhee Jr. author of Eden Shrugged Unabridged Edition.
This book is a very interesting & knowledgeable perspective on the road to spirituality. The author writes his own experience for the truth he is seeking and writes his findings. He compares many different beliefs and the comparison of them. The title really sums up his writing..
I was turned on to Author Telling about 1 decade ago by a friend at work. It was during a time where I needed spiritual guidance. Just like all of Mr. Tellings books, \The Verbal Truth of Christianity: How the Church Coopted the Jesus Message' is a cheer masterpiece that must be read several times to fully understand. Each read will open a new window to your daily life and change how you perceive Christianity. Eventually, this book will be life changing. What a blessing to have these words on paper! Thank you Mr Telling! Thank you!
This is a very short confusing book. I'm glad I read it though, because he tells of other authors who can explain it better than he does. Thank you.
The author presents a very interesting high level interpretation of the teachings of Christianity and provides some different points of view than are generally approached. So to the unsuspecting this might be looked at with confusion. This is a good read.
