When coming to the sacred traditions or texts of other people, it can be daunting and difficult for an outsider to understand what is going on.It can be easy to feel neglected or shunned – not because we are but because, as outsiders, we just don’t have the background necessary for a sound understanding of the traditions involved. And it’s nobody’s fault. Each faith has a rich multi-dimensional atmosphere of understanding, usually unspoken, which gives layered meaning to traditions and texts.Although the great majority of faith groups welcome sincerely curious outsiders, we can feel uncomfortable because of this unintentional wall of ignorance – and sometimes when we ask, our questions can be mistaken as challenges or, worse yet, as insulting. This is one point I particularly appreciate about Ahmed Lotfy Rashed’s The Qur’an Discussions. He has spent years speaking and answering questions about Islamic beliefs, and he is completely comfortable providing context and clarity to the sincere questioner. This second volume in Ahmed’s continuing series – again drawn from his volunteering with WhyIslam? - focuses on questions non-Muslims have about points and passages in the Qur’an, the angelically-delivered Revelation given to the Prophet Mohammad in the early 7th century, and the defining Holy Book for Islam. Rather than relate exchanges with several different people, Ahmed shares his continued correspondence with one person who asked questions as he read through the entire book, beginning to end.A broad range of topics is covered, all in an atmosphere of mutual respect and sincerity. Although Ahmed is a deep and thorough researcher, he answers conversationally rather than in academic language – giving the entire book a wonderful accessibility which makes it a pleasure to read. And the range of topics is astounding.Just from a cover-to-cover reading of the Qur’an, questions are asked addressing the compatibility of faith and science, interfaith relations and politics, and the inheritance rights of men and women. How should behavior change between those who we hope are friends and those who have openly betrayed our trust? When is violence appropriate, if ever? And how often can we ask for forgiveness, when we habitually do the wrong thing? After the first section, the chapters of the Qur’an are ordered pretty much by size (longest chapters toward the front) and not chronologically, so answers to these questions come through examination of historical placement of events, cultural context of the areas in which the particular chapters were given, and the audiences to which certain passages are specifically addressed.Ahmed’s guiding motivation is never to “sell” his faith but to share an honest understanding of the beliefs he holds most precious, and this really comes through. Overall, this is an excellent chapter-by-chapter examination of the Qur’an, powered and directed by the questions of an insatiably curious non-Muslim.An excellent exploration into the faith shared by one and a half billion of our neighbors.

This book is a must for the understanding of Islam for anyone who is reading the translation of the Quran for the first time. It is unique in the sense that it clears the misconceptions from the source i.e. Quran directly. For any new student of Islam, it will help develop a thorough understanding of Quran regarding quite a few important yet frequently misunderstood topics.

For an interesting discussion of what a learner may ask about Islam, this book is exceptionally well done. These days, much information regarding Islam (and about any other subject) is twisted to support an agenda. Coming to a source of information without a filter is refreshing and informational. As I am not associated with any established religious sect, I enjoy learning about how others see the world and their beliefs, compare them to my own, and gain from them. While I will not be adopting Islam as my religion, I learned through Mr. Rashed's work that I share many beliefs with Islam. I especially enjoyed the support of research and science... something that I find lacking in too many Christian beliefs.Book two does repeat some of what was included in the first book I read, but this is understandable, it focuses on one individual who had an extended correspondence with the author, and some of this was included in the first book.I do recommend Ahmed Lotfy Rashed's work for those wanting to get a clear picture of Islam.

I was provided with a free copy of "What a Muslim Would Say Book 2", and "Interfaith Dialogue and Debates" in exchange for an honest review.Let me begin by verifying that I am not a Muslim. However, since writing a novel (Forbidden, by F. Stone) wherein the setting is the Middle East and most of the characters are Muslim, I have studied the religion of Islam, though I don’t consider myself an authority on the subject. Far from it!During my studies, many Muslims have been overwhelming generous in their time, kindness, and eager to help me grasp not only the teachings of the prophet Mohammad, but to also understand the culture of Muslims - which varies depending upon many factors (history, country, government).Understanding Islam can be challenging. Ahmed Lofty Rashed has been inspired to assist both Muslim and non-Muslims understanding of Islam by inviting the public to send questions to WhyIslam.org. He responds to each question providing answers in clear language and refers to corresponding passages in the Koran. His answers are articulate, honest, non-confrontational, and comprehensive. What a Muslim Would Say Book 2 and Interfaith Dialogues and Debates (follow-up to Book 1) are a compilation of this email communication.Ahmed Lofty Rashed’s intent is to encourage understanding of Islam’s fundamental goal – to promote peace. The difficulty in understanding Islam is due to, in part, criminals who promote themselves as Muslim even while committing terrorism and atrocities which are in contradiction to the teachings of the Koran. The challenge is compounded by the media and political agents' desire to sway public opinion in a direction that promotes profit and votes – not peace. After reading Ahmed Rashed's three books, it occurred to me that to fully understand Islam, one needs to be almost immersed in the faith from birth AND to have a comprehensive knowledge of the historical events during the time of Mohammad. For non-Muslims, it can be a life long study.
