As a lover of train travel and railroads who has become interested over the years in African American history, I was pleased to have the opportunity to read this new book, "Railroads in the African American Experience" through the Amazon Vine Program. The author, Theodore Kornweibel, Jr. is professor emeritus of African American history at San Diego State University. Kornweibel is also a railfan. In the Preface, Kornweibel describes the origins of the book in a request from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in the early 1990's to recommend a speaker on African Americans and railroading. This request led Kornweibel to realize that the subject had never been adequately addressed. Kornweibel then tells the reader how he had been enamored of trains since his youth, from reading every book in the local public library as a child to doing volunteer railroad work while studying for his PhD and thereafter. Kornweibel then realized that he could combine his passions for railroading and for African American history by researching and writing their story. This book is the result.Although the book is described as "a photographic journey" and includes many pages of photographs, it is a lengthy and serious history. Kornweibel describes the bittersweet and difficult relationship between African Americans and railroading from the days of slavery to the late 20th Century. On the one hand, Kornweibel stresses the many harsh aspects of the story. He describes the harsh, physically demanding, and dangerous labors which African Americans performed on the railroads from the earliest days at low pay, with pervasive discrimination, and with little or no prospects for advancement. On the other hand, Kornweibel describes how railroad work helped, in the long run to create an African American middle class. Railroad workers were respected in the black community. Work on the railroad was frequently an alternative to sharecropping and life on the farm. For decades, more black people were employed in railroading than in any other industry. Through hard work and frugality, many African American railroad workers were able to own a home and other property and provide educations for their children. The railroad, as an employer and as a source of travel from South to North in the Great Migration of the early Twentieth Century, was an important component of Black life.Kornweibel shows an understanding of the railroad industry that goes far beyond that of the casual fan. He is able to explain the nature of railroad work in all its aspects, from laying track, to tending and maintaining a steam locomotive, to work in the yards, and to service occupations on sleepers and diners. His focus is on manual, low-pay occupations, because these were the only roles allowed to African American railroad workers for over a century. In detailed chapters, Kornweibel describes matters such as the role of slavery in early railroading in the South, African American work as construction and track laborers, African American service as firemen on steam engines (the job of engineer was off-limits to blacks), the dangerous work of brakemen and switchmen in yards and on the move, the work of Pullman Porters and cooks and waiters on passenger trains, the service of African American workers in factories devoted to the maintenance of steam engines, the service of African Americans as Red Caps and in other station jobs, and much else. Kornweibel pays special attention to the role of African American women on the railroad. The difficulties and harshness of these jobs comes through.Besides studying African American railroad workers, Kornweibel also examines the role of the railroads, and their segregated passenger cars and stations, on black life. He describes African American train travel during the era of Jim Crow with a focus on the many black people who rode the trains out of the South during the Great Migration, while sometimes returning southward to visit family and friends. Another chapter describes how railroad employment played a role in black communal life. In my favorite chapter of the book, Kornweibel examines the role of railroads in African American music, especially the railroad blues. An additional chapter considers the railroads in African American literature and the visual arts.The book includes many carefully annotated photographs which are not always presented in the book in the chapters to which they refer. The published volume will also include a series of color plates which, unfortunately, were unavailable in this advance reader copy. The book includes documentation in endnotes, but it could use a bibliography and an index.Readers with an interest in railroading or in African American history will enjoy this study of African Americans and the rails.Robin Friedman

Very accurate documentation of history.

Theodore Kornweibel Jr. has produced an outstanding work with this book. At almost 600 pages and with numerous illustrations, he has put together an exhaustive exploration of how the history of African Americans and the railroads are intertwined. For roughly a hundred years the railroads were a major part of the American economy and, as Kornweibel documents, a major player in the lives of African Americans from the days of slavery to the present, for both good and evil. It would be fair to say that no one can really claim a thorough understanding of the railroads in this country without considering their history with regard to African Americans, and that no one can fully grasp how African American history has been shaped in this country without looking at the role of the railroads. It also throws an unflattering light on the struggles between Capital and Unions - and how both found common ground in institutionalizing racism. Beyond that, one need be neither a railroader or African American to appreciate how this book contributes to understanding the full tapestry of America's history. This is not ancient history. Kornweibel encountered resistance in doing his research from major railroads today, whose corporate ancestors employed slave labor in building lines that are still in use, and who do not want the legal or moral issues to be brought up at all. Kornweibel, with the use of pictures and stories, also documents how railroads, racism, and popular culture intersected. Yet, railroads also used to be large employers of African Americans, led to the creation of an African American middle class, and enabled the great migrations that still have effects on current events. It's a story that has not really been told - until now. There are many villains, and a very few heros. With the assortment of excellent photos and other images, with the thorough documenting of the role of race in the various railroad skills and crafts, with the exploration of socio-cultural aspects following from this hitherto neglected subject, Kornweibel has done a remarkable job. Every chapter has numerous citations of much original material he uncovered. This work should become a standard academic reference and the inspiration for further exploration of this subject. Another book that would supplement the revelations Kornweibel has produced is "Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism " by James W. Loewen. Just as Kornweibel has documented the intricacies of race and railroading, Loewen has uncovered the dirty secret of America - that there was a large-scale 'ethnic cleansing' style purge of African Americans from towns determined to be white only. It's a form of American Apartheid that is still largely unacknowledged - and still being practiced in some locales.
